Admission to the nursing program is competitive. Students are selected according to a 100 point ranking system. Ranking is based on the evaluation of several factors:

  1. GPA Range
  2. The HESI entrance exam must be taken at WCCCD and applicants must receive a passing score in all the disciplines tested. The results of this exam are only valid for a period of two years. The HESI A2 entrance exam may only be taken twice in a 12 month period HESI A2 Exam: A minimum score of 80% in each scored area: Math, Reading Comprehension, and Anatomy & Physiology. (scores are valid for 2 years from the date the test was taken.)
  3. Number of pre-requisite credit hours completed at WCCCD Prerequisite Courses: ENG 110 or 119 English I 3 Credits
    BIO 155 Introductory to Biology 4 Credits
    BIO 240 Human Anatomy and Physiology I 4 Credits
    BIO 250 Human Anatomy and Physiology II 4 Credits
    BIO 295 Microbiology 4 Credits
    ALH 105 Medical Math 3 Credits
    Prerequisite Total 22 Credits *BIO 155 is a prerequisite to BIO 240 and BIO 295
    * If there is a lapse greater than 5 years for BIO 240, BIO 250,ALH 105, and BIO 295, students must retake the courses.

End-of-Program Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply professional accountability congruent with the roles, responsibilities, and values associated with nursing practice.
  2. Integrate evidence-based principles as a foundation for nursing practice.
  3. Demonstrate effective patient centered care in diverse populations in a variety of care environments.
  4. Examine care standards with continuous scrutiny for the betterment of individuals, families, groups, and communities.

Upon completion, graduates are eligible to complete a national exam through the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The exam measures the WCCCD nursing graduates competencies needed to perform safely and effectively as an entry-level graduate nurse. Successful completion of the exam is a requirement for employment as a RN. The table below identifies the two-year pass rates for nursing graduates.
